Reporters Without Borders hails today’s Gujarat high court decision lifting a ban on the sale of a book about Pakistan’s founder, Ali Jinnah, by Jaswant Singh, a former leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), India’s main opposition party.
According to the BBC (see its report), the high court said the Gujarat state government had not “read the book” before imposing the ban.
“In reaching this decision, the Indian judicial system has shown that it recognises the fundamental importance of the principle of free expression, and that censorship cannot be tolerated in the world’s biggest democracy,” Reporters Without Borders said.
